Smith & Wesson Model 36, .38SPL, Excellent Condition, Floating “J” Up for bid is a Smith & Wesson Model 36, sometimes referred to as a Chief’s Special, shooting .38S&W Special ammo. I have received two different answers as to the date of manufacture. I received my information from the helpful gentlemen at the Smith & Wesson Forum. One date is 1966, the other is 1971. Also, this revolver has what is referred to as a floating “J” serial number. Usually, S&W serial numbers start with a letter followed by a series of numbers, as in J559XX. This gun, however, has a serial number of 5J59XX. I am led to understand this is pretty rare, possibly adding to its value as a collectible.

I had originally purchased this gun for my wife, but she got interested in Cowboy Mounted Shooting, so her taste in firearms took a very different direction. It has been tucked in the back of the safe for six years now and it is time to start “thinning the herd”. I had forgotten what excellent condition the gun was in, not having looked at it this whole time. I was quickly reminded when I started cleaning it. The bore is bright & shiny, as are the bores in the cylinder. There is hardly any wear, and you have to look very closely to find it. There is just some very minor wear on the cylinder latch, on the edge of the barrel and the usual “rotation lines” on the cylinder, but other than that you need to get out the magnifying glass to find any more. The bluing on this gun is a very fine example of the excellence of S&W finishes. The bluing is so rich and deep it appears to be black. The lockup is pretty tight with almost no play in the crane and cylinder. I took the gun to the range just to make sure everything was functioning as it should, and I was pleasantly surprised at the smoothness of the action. Whether you are purchasing this gun for every day carry, for yourself or your better half, or buying it as an addition to a S&W collection, you will not be disappointed in this little revolver.
